All American Soap Box Derby Each summer, hundreds of young champions come here to face off for six national titles at the Soap Box Derby. This tradition goes back to 1933, when Dayton Daily News photographer Myron Scott saw some kids racing their homemade cars and held a contest for them. Boy Scout Troop 74 Troop 74 consists primarily of boys between the ages of 11 and 17. The troop is broken into patrols that take part in campouts as well as other events run by the District and Council.
